The Next Wave: Charting a new Course for Thunder Bay's Waterfront presents an ambitious redevelopment plan for the City of Thunder Bay's industrial waterfront, a scenic 55-kilometer stretch along the north shore of Lake Superior. The goal of the plan is to enable the people of Thunder Bay to progressively claim the waterfront for public, recreational and tourism uses for the first time since the City was settled.
The planning and urban design team of Moriyama & Teshima Planners Limited, The Planning Partnership, TCI Management, and Hemson Consultants undertook extensive research into the history of the land and people. Several hundred people were consulted in a series of brainstorming sessions to create a vision for the future, refine and prioritize key opportunities/projects, and develop the refined plan and financial plan.
The principles of the vision included:
- Continuous public access along the full length of the waterfront.
- Redevelopment within the context of an active working industrial port.
- Sustainable development.
- Extension of the urban cores to the water's edge.
- Development of the north waterfront district as a destination attraction.
Immediately following submission to Thunder Bay's City Council in 1998, The Next Wave received unanimous approval. Financing and implementation are now underway.
