The National Museum of Saudi Arabia, which opened in Riyadh in 1999 to celebrate the centenary of Saudi unification, was the result of an international design competition. As a member of the competition team, Moriyama & Teshima Planners Limited developed the urban design and landscaping for the 83-acre site of the King Abd Al-Aziz Historical Centre. Once the competition was won, the landscape architects and planners collaborated with the architectural team on design development of the Museum, including the central courtyard. Because Museum-going is a fairly new leisure activity in Saudi Arabia, public accessibility was an issue. Entrances are located on all sides, aligned with major streets to welcome passers-by into the Museum's reception area. After sunset, when temperatures fall, families can enjoy the fountains and water play areas in the Museum's forecourt. Indigenous plants evoke the image of the desert oasis which sustained the early settlement of Saudi's capital city. Pools and fountains provide cool microclimates that moderate the extreme hot and arid climate. Link:
