Kuwait University

The New University City campus for Kuwait University occupies a 540 hectare (1285 acre), formerly undeveloped site at Al-Shadadiyah, Kuwait. It has been Master Planned to accommodate 30,000 full time students by the year 2015, and will incorporate 16 colleges and related support facilities. The Master Plan includes building design guidelines aimed at reducing environmental impact and achieving sustainability goals.

The Toronto based consortium of WZMH Architects, Moriyama & Teshima Architects, and du Toit Allsopp Hillier were awarded the commission in September of 2004. Moriyama & Teshima Planners Ltd. are the landscape architects and environmental planners for the project.

The campus master plan is conceived as a city on the banks of a river of landscape. Two linked campuses, one for men and the other for women, are separated by a wide oasis - a "Palm Forest" over 1 kilometer in length. Faced by faculty offices and Graduate Studies Research, it will be a quiet space of academic repose, a sanctuary and place for contemplation that will become an icon for the University.

Each campus is organized along a "Galleria" - a grand scale outdoor weather-protected street, urban in character and animated by student activities that link all major functions of each campus. The Galleria will give an identity to each campus creating a sense of place that will be memorable for all its students. Within the University City, college clusters will form neighbourhoods bringing scale and identity to each part of the University.

The most spectacular feature of the master plan is the landscaped "oasis" in the centre of the University that separates the men's and women's campuses. In addition to providing separation between the two campuses, this space will be used by faculty and graduate students for quiet contemplation - a philosopher's walk, promoting academic discourse and providing relief from the day-to-day life at the University. Passive in character, this space will be viewed from offices and research spaces.

At the eastern end of the oasis is a dramatic water feature that becomes the introduction to the oasis for everyone approaching the campus from the east. The water feature is designed to serve as a bio-remediation system to enhance the sustainable design of the new campus.
