As part of the 1996 international design competition for the King Abd al-Aziz Historical Centre, Moriyama & Teshima Planners Limited presented a vision for the central part of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia's capital city.
The winning submission unifies the key areas of the city related to the life of King Abd al-Aziz. The Gardens of Arriyadh is the key concept of the vision. We imagined the Gardens of Arriyadh as a broad green area running through the centre of Riyadh, connecting and celebrating the birth places of the modern Saudi state - the historic Masmak Fort and Murabba Palace. It is a public pedestrian realm where people can gather, a place that evokes the image of the garden oasis so deeply embedded in the culture of Saudi Arabia.
Groves of date palms create a lush green setting for new and old buildings of national and cultural importance. At its northern terminus is the King Abd al-Aziz Historical Centre with the restored Murabba Palace and new National Museum of Saudi Arabia, completed by Moriyama & Teshima in 1999.
